The objective of Operation Neptune was to establish a connected Allied beachhead through five beaches in Normandy, codenamed, from west to east, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The landings themselves were part of a larger scheme of an invasion of northwestern Europe and making inroads into Nazi-controlled territory, called Operation Overlord. The operation was being planned since 1943. The Normandy landings were codenamed Operation Neptune, and took place on June 6, 1944.
